Views and Charts

Overview

Apollo presents energy-market analysis through a collection of purpose-built Views. Each View is designed around a particular analytical question and determines which data, series, chart type, statistics, and viewer-specific controls are available.

The selected object in the Object Tree determines which Views are available. Selecting a different object can change the active View, replace the chart's series, update the legend, and change the units displayed on the axes. Switching Views can also replace the entire series set because each View reads and presents a different part of the scenario data.

Apollo's common chart engine is based on Highcharts. The natural chart type is normally determined by the active View and the available data. Chart Settings can provide a chart-type override for supported visual types, while certain viewers have their own specialized chart presentations such as boxplots, stacked areas, and Flow Duration Curves.

Views

What Is a View?

A View is a named analytical presentation used by Apollo to answer a particular type of market or asset question.

For example:

  • Net Load focuses on pool-level demand, VRE generation, residual load, and price.
  • BidStack shows capacity distributed across bid-price tiers and can overlay generation.
  • Fuel Summary shows generation by fuel type.
  • Economics focuses on revenue, cost, profit, price, and generation.
  • Storage shows charging, discharging, price, and storage level.
  • Comparison lets you compare the behavior of the same object across scenarios.
  • Flow Duration Curve shows the distribution of interconnector flow rather than a normal time series.

The View determines the analytical structure of the chart. It is therefore normal for the chart to look substantially different after changing Views.

Selecting a View

Available Views are presented in the Dashboard's View switcher / View tab bar above the chart area. The available list depends on the currently selected object and scenario.

When an object is selected, Apollo determines which Views are applicable to that object. A View that is not applicable may be unavailable or hidden rather than functioning as a valid analysis option.

The supplied source confirms that the View list varies by object type. For example, a Link can expose Link View and Flow Duration Curve View, while a Region can expose Fuel Summary and other region-oriented Views.

Selecting a View does not merely change the chart's appearance. It can load a different series set, change the Y-axis units, change statistics, and expose different toolbar controls.

Available Views

The Apollo reference set documents the following View types:

Summary Is Different from Chart Views

Summary is not a normal chart viewer. It is a table-based viewer with no X axis, Y axis, chart type, chart series, zoom, tooltip, or chart export controls.

It has its own controls for:

  • Price & Energy columns;
  • Operation columns;
  • Cost columns;
  • object-type table visibility;
  • All / None table controls;
  • Site location filtering;
  • Raw Data mode through the Create button.

These controls replace the normal chart-oriented toolbar behavior for Summary. fileciteturn4file6L456-L495

Historical Database View Is Also Table-Based

Historical Database View is also not a chart. It displays the contents of HistDBErr.csv, grouped by error type.

It provides error-type chips, All / None controls, summary counts, horizontal table scrolling, and table-level CSV export. Normal chart controls are hidden because there is no chart to configure. fileciteturn1file1L76-L129


Default View by Object Type

When you select an object in the Object Tree, Apollo can automatically open the View that best matches that object's data.

The documented default mappings include:

The source material contains a conflict for the Site default: the general Dashboard guide maps Site to BidStack View, while Viewer Reference B identifies Economics View as the default for Site objects. This should be verified against the running application before the Support Site presents one as definitive.

The other documented mappings are consistent across the supplied references. How the Chart Changes When You Work

A chart in Apollo is not a static object. Its series, axes, viewer, and statistics can change as you work.

Selecting a Different Object

When you select a different object in the Object Tree:

  1. The chart title changes to the selected object's name and type.
  2. The entire series set is replaced with data for the new object.
  3. The available Views may change.
  4. The legend is rebuilt for the new series set.
  5. The default View may change according to the new object's type.

This is why two objects can produce charts with completely different legends even when you have not manually changed the chart configuration.

Switching Views

When you switch Views:

  • a different series set may be loaded;
  • the Y-axis unit can change;
  • the legend is rebuilt;
  • statistics can change;
  • viewer-specific controls can appear or disappear;
  • the chart can change from a line to a stacked area, boxplot, Flow Duration Curve, or another supported representation.

For example, switching from a Demand/Generation/Price viewer to Fuel Summary replaces the demand and price lines with fuel-generation series. fileciteturn2file1L153-L159

Changing the Time Period

The ChartToolbar provides four standard time periods:

Changing the period changes the visible time window and can change the data granularity.

As granularity changes, a viewer may aggregate values or omit series that are meaningful only at a finer resolution. fileciteturn2file1L164-L175

Moving Through Time

Use the Previous, Next, or Date Picker controls to move the chart window through the simulation.

When you move to another period:

  • the same series set is normally retained;
  • values update to the new time window;
  • an automatically scaled Y axis can change its range to fit the new data.

This automatic resizing is one of the main reasons Apollo provides Freeze Y Axes. fileciteturn2file1L177-L183

Comparison

When comparison is supported, Apollo can overlay scenario data for the same object.

The common object-comparison feature is available in:

  • DGP View;
  • ProfilesView;
  • Reserve Price View;
  • Economics View;
  • Price, Generation + Demand View.

The separate Comparison View is a different feature. It compares the same object across scenarios and supports up to five additional comparison scenarios. It is manually selected and is not a default View. fileciteturn3file5L358-L373

Chart Types

Apollo's confirmed natural chart types include:

Chart Type Override

Chart Settings provides a Type selector that can override the natural chart presentation.

The confirmed options are:

  • Line
  • Area
  • Column
  • Spline

Scatter, Step, and Horizontal Bar are not user-selectable chart-type options in the current source. fileciteturn4file1L96-L110

This override should not be confused with the specialized chart types used by viewers such as ProfilesView and Flow Duration Curve View.


ChartToolbar

The ChartToolbar is the control strip directly below the top bar and above the main chart area. It contains general chart controls plus controls that change depending on the active View.

The toolbar normally contains the selected object label, viewer-specific controls, Compare where supported, Summary's Create control where applicable, time navigation, chart actions, and the right-panel dock control. fileciteturn1file7L527-L540

Viewer-Specific Toolbar Controls

The toolbar is deliberately adaptive. Some Views add controls that are meaningful only for that View.

When Toolbar Controls Are Hidden

The toolbar does not show every control in every state.

The time-navigation group is hidden when:

  • no object is selected;
  • Summary is active;
  • Historical Database View is active.

The action-button group is also hidden when there is no active chart viewer or when Summary / Historical Database View is active. The Date Picker is disabled in A / All because there is no narrower period to select. fileciteturn2file3L297-L313

This is expected behavior rather than a software error.


Using the Chart

Zoom In

To zoom into a time range:

  1. Move the cursor into the chart.
  2. Click and drag horizontally across the area of interest.
  3. Release the mouse button.
  4. Apollo zooms to the selected range.

A selection rectangle appears while dragging.

Reset Zoom

Click Reset Zoom to return the chart to its complete X and Y data range.

Reset Zoom affects the current chart zoom only. It does not reset chart settings such as colours or series styles. fileciteturn3file1L87-L95

Panning

Pan is not implemented as a separate first-class chart gesture. To move back out of a focused view, use Reset Zoom and then select another range. fileciteturn3file1L87-L91


Legend and Series

Showing and Hiding Series

When a chart has a legend, clicking a legend item toggles the corresponding series between visible and hidden.

Hidden series are tracked by chart type and remembered for the current session. fileciteturn3file1L97-L103

Reset Series Visibility

The Reset Series Visibility toolbar button restores all hidden series.

Its state indicates whether the chart currently contains hidden series:

This control affects visibility, not the underlying data.

Why Series Can Change

The series displayed by a View are determined by the selected object, active View, scenario contents, and sometimes the selected period or View-specific option.

For example:

  • Net Load can hide the Price series and consequently remove the secondary price axis.
  • Fuel Summary can contain one series for each available fuel type.
  • AggregateStack creates demand series based on Portfolio membership and can omit generating sites with all-zero generation.
  • Flow Duration Curve data comes from a pre-computed FDC file rather than live time aggregation.

Tooltip

Move the cursor over a chart to inspect the values of the visible series at that X-axis position.

A tooltip can show:

  • the X-axis label or timestamp;
  • series colour;
  • series name;
  • formatted series value.

The Tooltip Location control provides three modes:

FloatingA draggable tooltip stays inside the chart. Its position is remembered between sessions.

When Right Panel mode is active, the data card can display up to 20 visible series. If more series are available, Apollo shows a "+N more" indicator. fileciteturn1file7L554-L562


Axis Controls

Start at Zero

Start at Zero changes the Y-axis minimum to zero instead of the automatically fitted minimum.

This is useful when comparing absolute magnitudes rather than only the relative movement of a series.

The setting is stored separately by viewer. BidStack and Fuel Summary default to Start at Zero on, while Link View defaults to off because link flows can be bidirectional and may include negative values. fileciteturn2file1L97-L110

Freeze Y Axes

Freeze Y Axes captures the current Y-axis range and keeps that range while you navigate through periods or scenarios.

Recommended workflow:

  1. Navigate to a representative period.
  2. Adjust the visible chart until the desired Y range is shown.
  3. Activate Freeze Y Axes.
  4. Navigate through other periods.
  5. Compare the chart using the same visual scale.
  6. Disable Freeze Y Axes when automatic scaling is wanted again.

The freeze state is tracked separately for standard viewers, Comparison View, and ProfilesView. fileciteturn2file1L110-L122

Axis Labels

Axis Labels toggles the axis-label text, including axis names and units. It does not remove the numerical scale values or grid lines. fileciteturn3file1L120-L122


Chart Settings

The Chart Settings panel contains configuration that is more detailed than the quick toolbar controls.

Primary Axis

The Primary Axis section provides:

  • Lock to Primary;
  • Auto Scale;
  • Min;
  • Max.

Level Axis

Storage View has a separate Level Axis because storage level is measured differently from the MW traces.

The Level Axis provides its own Auto Scale and Min / Max controls. fileciteturn2file0L27-L32

Grid Lines

Apollo provides four independent grid-line controls:

Visual Settings

The Visual section provides:

  • Axis Labels — On by default.
  • Animations — On by default. Turning them off can improve performance on large datasets.
  • Type — chart-type override with Line, Area, Column, and Spline. fileciteturn2file0L51-L57

Series Settings

The Series section appears when at least one chart series is loaded.

Each series is shown with:

  • a visibility checkbox;
  • a colour swatch.

A Show All button appears when a series is hidden.

This is equivalent to controlling visibility through the chart legend. fileciteturn2file0L61-L65

Legacy Statistics Display

Chart Settings can expose a compact read-only Statistics section containing Min, Max, and Average for Price, Demand, and Generation when those values are available.

This is secondary to the main statistics bar below the chart. fileciteturn2file0L69-L71

Chart Layout

Apollo supports two chart-area layouts.

Layout 1 — Chart + Stats + Right Panel

  • Main chart in the centre.
  • Statistics bar below the chart.
  • Right panel for tooltip data, statistics detail, fuel mix, and other contextual information.

Layout 2 — Chart + Two Lower Panels

  • Right panel is removed.
  • Dock button is hidden.
  • Lower area is divided into two panels.
  • Provides additional horizontal space for chart/detail presentation.

The layout is stored per viewer and persists between application restarts. fileciteturn4file4L276-L335

Overlay Opacity

Overlay Opacity controls the background opacity of in-chart overlays such as:

  • chart title overlays;
  • floating tooltip boxes.

Separate controls are provided for Light and Dark themes, with values from 0 (transparent) to 1 (fully opaque). fileciteturn2file0L88-L94

Reset All Settings

Use Reset All Settings when you want to restore Chart Settings to their factory defaults and clear saved axis state.

This is different from Reset Zoom, which only restores the chart's zoom range.


Statistics

Statistics are calculated by the active View from the chart data currently loaded. They update when the selected object, period, or scenario data changes. fileciteturn4file7L528-L549

Statistics Bar

In Layout 1, stat cards appear below the chart. In Layout 2, they appear in the lower panel.

A stat card can contain:

  • a label;
  • a primary value;
  • optional supporting information such as sample counts or percentages.

Clicking a stat card opens a Stat Detail card in the right panel when the active View supports it.

The detail card can contain values such as Min, Max, Count, Sum, and Standard Deviation, depending on the View and statistic type. fileciteturn4file7L540-L566

Viewer-Specific Statistics

Statistics are not identical across Views.

For example:

  • Net Load provides Average Price, Total VRE Generation, and Total Net Load.
  • ProfilesView provides 24 hourly statistic cards based on median profile values and sample counts.
  • Flow Duration Curve provides Peak Flow, Median Flow, Capacity Use, and Flow Range.
  • Economics provides Generation, Avg Price, Revenue, Cost, Profit, Margin, fuel-type statistics, and station breakdown information.

View-Specific Chart Behavior

Although all chart Views share the common ChartToolbar, each View can impose its own rules.

BidStack View

BidStack is a stacked representation of bid-price buckets. It can include a Generation line and, for Site data with DGP overlays, Demand and Price lines.

The toolbar can switch between Graph and Bid Table for supported objects. The Bid Table shows the underlying bid rows for the current period, with columns derived from the scenario's bid CSV. fileciteturn1file5L400-L428

Net Load View

Net Load uses stacked VRE Generation and Residual Load areas with Demand, Generation, and Price overlays.

Hiding Price removes the secondary Price axis. Hiding VRE Generation or Residual Load changes the visible stacked total. fileciteturn4file9L631-L681

Fuel Summary

Fuel Summary uses a stacked area chart with one series for each fuel type present in the selected Region.

Fuel colours are viewer-specific and are not necessarily interchangeable with general series-colour customization. Refer to the Fuel Summary guide for its fixed fuel palette and rules.

AggregateStack

AggregateStack creates its series from Portfolio membership. Each Load member can contribute a demand area, while generating Site members with non-zero generation can contribute generation lines. There is no user-facing series filter within this View; navigate to the member object itself when you need a dedicated member-level analysis. fileciteturn3file8L586-L644

ProfilesView

ProfilesView is not a normal time-series chart.

Its X axis is always the 24 hours of the day, and its primary representation is a boxplot showing the distribution of values for each hour.

Its toolbar therefore uses Profile Type and Day Type controls instead of the normal D/W/M/A time navigation. It still supports Reset Zoom, Start at Zero, Freeze Y, Axis Labels, Tooltip, Export, Chart Settings, Reset Series Visibility, and comparison. fileciteturn1file8L589-L631

Flow Duration Curve View

Flow Duration Curve View is also different from ordinary time-series Views.

It plots sorted flow values against percentage of time exceeded. Its source is a pre-computed FDC_<ID>.csv, so D/W/M/A does not behave like normal time-series navigation and may not change the displayed data. fileciteturn3file6L443-L480

Regional and Zonal Trace Views

Regional Trace and Zonal Trace use line charts with one series per region or zone and allow a trace-type selector for Price, Demand, or Generation.

Series Customization

Legend Interaction

Left-clicking a legend item controls visibility.

  • Click once to hide the series.
  • Click again to show it.
  • Use Reset Series Visibility to restore every hidden series.

The common chart reference confirms this as standard legend behavior across chart Views. fileciteturn4file1L122-L128

Context Menu Customization

The supplied source set identifies series styling as part of Apollo's chart-customization system, but the common Charts and Toolbars reference does not provide a fully verified control-by-control specification for the right-click context menu.

Therefore, the following details from the draft page should be treated as pending running-application verification before becoming permanent Support Site claims:

  • Right-clicking a legend item to open the context menu;
  • Isolate Series / Restore All Series;
  • Series Type options specifically containing Area Spline;
  • exact Line Width values;
  • exact Dash Style menu entries;

  • 20-colour palette;

The common reference does confirm that Chart Settings has series visibility controls, but the exact right-click implementation and persistence model for individual series styling were not established in the supplied source material. Do not publish those details as verified behavior until they are confirmed against the running Apollo application.


Exporting Charts and Data

The Export button provides both visual chart exports and underlying data exports.

PNG, JPEG, PDF, and SVG represent the chart as rendered, including visible series, legends, and axis labels. CSV and XLSX contain the underlying numeric data for the series currently on the chart. fileciteturn4file1L124-L128


Fullscreen

Click the Fullscreen control to make the chart fill the browser window.

To exit fullscreen:

  • click the Fullscreen control again;
  • press Escape;
  • or use the fullscreen option in the Export menu.

Fullscreen is useful when reviewing dense charts, inspecting data points, or preparing a chart for presentation. fileciteturn4file1L118-L120


Understanding Why a Control Is Missing or Disabled

A missing or dimmed control is often intentional.

Check the following before treating it as a problem:

  1. Is the correct object selected? Some Views are only available for particular object types.
  2. Does the selected scenario support that View? Zonal Trace, for example, is only available in zonal scenarios.
  3. Does the View support the feature? Net Load does not support comparison mode, while DGP and certain other Views do.
  4. Is there an active chart? Some controls are unavailable while a viewer is loading.
  5. Is the current layout Layout 2? The right-panel Dock button is hidden because Layout 2 has no right panel.
  6. Is the selected View table-based? Summary and Historical Database hide the normal chart controls.
  7. Does the chart actually contain the feature? Secondary-axis and Level-axis settings only appear where the relevant axes exist.

Practical Workflows

Quickly Inspect One Metric

  1. Select the required object.
  2. Select the View that contains the desired metric.
  3. Hide unnecessary legend series.
  4. Use the Tooltip Location control to choose Right Panel, Follow Cursor, or Floating.
  5. Zoom into the period you want to inspect.
  6. Click Reset Zoom when finished.

Compare Different Time Periods

  1. Choose the appropriate D/W/M/A period.
  2. Navigate to a representative period.
  3. Adjust the chart scale as needed.
  4. Activate Freeze Y Axes.
  5. Move through other periods with Previous / Next.
  6. Compare the charts using the same Y-axis scale.

Prepare a Chart for Presentation

  1. Select the relevant View and object.
  2. Hide unnecessary series.
  3. Adjust Axis Labels and grid lines to reduce clutter.
  4. Choose the most useful chart layout.
  5. Configure the tooltip or close the right panel if it is not needed.
  6. Enter Fullscreen.
  7. Export to PNG, JPEG, PDF, or SVG.

Compare Scenarios

  1. Select the object to be compared.
  2. Activate a View that supports comparison or switch to Comparison View.

  5. Use the chart and statistics to examine differences.
  6. Remove comparison scenarios when finished or switch back to the normal View.

Common Questions

Why did my chart change completely after selecting another object?

Selecting an object rebuilds the series set and can also change the default View. The new chart is based on that object's available data.

Why did the Y axis change when I clicked Next?

The chart normally uses automatic Y-axis scaling. A new period can contain a different data range, so Apollo rescales the axis to fit that period. Use Freeze Y Axes when you need a consistent scale across periods.

Why did the Price axis disappear?

In Views with an optional Price series, hiding or losing the Price series can also remove its secondary Y axis. Net Load is a documented example. fileciteturn4file9L631-L681

Why is D/W/M/A not available?

Summary and Historical Database View have no time-series chart, so those controls are hidden. ProfilesView uses a fixed 24-hour X axis and therefore does not use D/W/M/A. Why can't I compare this View?

Not all Views support object comparison. The common comparison button is only exposed for DGP, Profiles, Reserve Price, Economics, and Price, Generation + Demand. fileciteturn2file3L261-L273

Why can't I find Price Duration Curve?

The current source identifies Price Duration Curve View as inactive and commented out in the current configuration. It therefore should not be presented as an active selectable View. fileciteturn4file1L96-L110

Why does a View have different series in a different scenario?

The series available to a View depend on the data actually produced by the scenario. A scenario can have different fuels, objects, outputs, or columns than another scenario, which can change the series available for display.
